Jude gives Law a bad name—at least, he did Tuesday night on the not so mean streets of his northwest London enclave.

The star was arrested by London police following a skirmish with a paparazzo outside his home while en route to the British GQ Man of the Year Awards, at which he presented the Lifetime Achievement award to Alfie predecessor and Sleuth costar Michael Caine.

The 34-year-old heartthrob was accused of trying to grab the snap-happy photographer’s camera and was arrested after turning himself in to the nearby Marylebone police station. The paparazzo, who has not been identified, claims Law got a little too aggressive while trying to pry the camera away and has alleged assault against the actor.

“Mr. Law provided the police with a statement regarding his denials of allegations by a paparazzi photographer against him and made his own allegations concerning the photographer,” Law’s attorney, Graham Shear, said. “Jude has the utmost respect for the police and whilst this is an ongoing matter, no further comment will be made.”

For their part, the London Metropolitan Police issued their own statement concerning the incident.

“A 34-year-old man from Maida Vale was arrested yesterday on suspicion of bodily harm after voluntarily attending a London police station,” they said.

“The arrest followed an allegation of assault yesterday at a residential address in Maida Vale. The 34-year-old man was released on bail to a date in October pending further inquiries.”

Charges have not yet been filed against Law, though he will be require to return to the police station next month for further questioning.

The actor’s arrest comes days after he was spotted making nice with a slew of paparazzi at the Venice Film Festival, where he and Caine, along with director Kenneth Branagh, attended the world premiere of Sleuth. The film is a remake of the 1972 mystery and revolves around an aging mystery writer who loses his wife to a young male hairdresser. Caine also starred in the original flick, though then as the younger man.

The film screened in competition at Venice, where it is competing for the Lido’s top prize, the Golden Lion.

Law’s bust also comes in the wake of an increasing number of similar arrests by London’s finest of some of London’s most famous.
