IDolDi ba lahat naman tayo nandadaya paminsan-minsan
IDOL, at face-value, seems typical. It appears to be a simple coming-of-age story about friendship and youth and high school life. But more than that, it is a story about honesty, integrity and honor, and the differences between these ideals—and why sometimes they do not go together.
The story opens with a typical problem of high school students. Elly’s friends, Simon, Tompet, and JP are all in danger of not graduating this school year. They have been delinquent through the years, and in spite of Elly’s help, they are included in the list of those who may not pass their Physics class.
Needless to say, Elly owes much to Simon. Even the comforts and pleasures that a teen-ager should experience—he owes these to his best buddy. And so Elly returns the favor by helping Simon and their other friends in their academics.
Friendship and “utang-na-loob” win over the values that Elly’s father has instilled in him. One day, Elly decides to sneak into the secretary’s office, open the computer file and print a copy of the exam for his three friends. Then there came the fourth, then the fifth, then the sixth …
In the unfolding of the story, the principles of each of the characters are put to the test. As a result, the word integrity acquires a new meaning and our values as a people are revealed.
